Lake Tateshina

The beating heart of Tateshina thermal retreat

A sanctuary of relaxation since old, Tateshina is a thermal retreat immersed in nature with at
least six different types of hot springs flowing down from the mountains. The beneficial properties of its waters have been known for centuries and many a famous samurai are said to have bathed in its healing waters after a fight.

At the center of this area lies Lake Tashina, a pristine pool of water surrounded by the lush vegetation of the highland. A great spot to just relax and while away the time, the lake offers a great view on the Yatsugatake Mountains and Mt. Tateshina-yama, a few leisure facilities and lots of piece and quiet.

On one side of the lake, there is a sculpture park where you can roam freely. On the other side, there are restaurants, lodging facilities and souvenir shops. Opposite to it, you can find Shoko-ji Temple where you can see cherry blossoms between late April and early May.

The place is especially beautiful in Autumn when the trees along its shores turn a fiery red. If you are staying in the area, we suggest you stop by after dark when the lake is illuminated.

A bit of trivia: the lake is actually one of the many man-made reservoirs created by the locals to bring fresh water to the rural villages. It is part of a bigger waterway system called “segi” implemented over three centuries ago.
