The Flying Mud Boat

The teahouse which defies the laws of gravity

The Flying Mud Boat, a unique creation by the local architect Fujimori Terunobu, is a teahouse like you have never seen before.

The boat-like structure floating in the sky truly looks like it came out of a fantasy world. Made of natural building materials often employed in traditional Japanese architecture such as wood, earth and plaster, it merges with its surroundings.

It is part of a teahouse series which also features Takasugi-an (the teahouse built too high) and Hikusugi-an (the teahouse built too low), both a few steps away from the Flying Mud Boat teahouse. * The teahouses are private property and entrance is permitted only during certain tours and events.
